I’ve figured out what I’m going to watch as my Thanksgiving movie this year. I’ve only ever made it to the actual theater on Thanksgiving a few times, and it always feels decadent and special. Most of the time, though, I rent something to watch at home. It’s usually too cold and I’m too full of carbs and tryptophan to go anywhere; by the end of the night I’ve renamed my stomach ‘The Rotunda,’ and point at it and say, “This is where I now conduct important matters of state.”
Widows is very good! Meanwhile, I have seen Hanif post about The Last Waltz, and have it on my list of things to watch, and I have yet to get to it. My go-to is usually Jodie Foster's Home For the Holidays.
Ooh thank you for the heist movie recommendation! I adore heist movies. My favorite lesser known (but deserves to be well known) heist movie is Logan Lucky. Happy Thanksgiving!!!
Happy Thanksgiving, Hrishi! Didn't have time to make your mom's mango pie this year, but my family will be enjoying the ice cream version as dessert. The flavor is so popular that my local Salt & Straw was out of both scoops and pints when I visited, so I had to get delivery -- expensive but worth it!
I LOVE WIDOWS! I also frequently ask people if they’ve seen it and try to convince them the error of their ways if they haven’t. After a quick description of the plot, I assure them the only flaw is that Cynthia Erivo was not allowed to sing in it. It’s been too long since I’ve seen this movie and will take this as a prompt to correct that.
I will definitely check out Widows because your recommendations are always spot on. My husband and I celebrate Thanksgiving with my best friend and her family ever since her parents died. We have a traditional turkey meal and then see a movie. This year we’re seeing Glass Onion. I’ll let you know how it is! I have two gluten-free crust mango pies cooling in the fridge as I type this. Pictures coming soon. 😊 Happy Thanksgiving to you, Lindsey, Watson, and Sumesh Uncle!!
Thanks for the heist movie recc! I haven't seen it, but I am putting it in my queue, maybe even for tonight. This is one of my favorite "guilty pleasure" (don't believe in this idea, but if I did...) genres, along with spy movies -- I think of them as part of a larger category of "thoughtful thriller." Any other great heist movie reccs? Some of my favs that fit this broader genre: Out of Sight, Ulee's Gold, Lone Star, The Bureau (French series), yes Michael Clayton, Farewell (French).
WIDOWS is so good! And I also nearly watched it on Thanksgiving, and now regret not doing so. I did warm up the day before with LUCKY GRANDMA, which is a great heist film of its own.
I went to Salt & Straw on Saturday in your mom's honor, but sadly they had already switched over to Christmas flavors. I did think of her while enjoying the non-seasonal strawberry balsamic flavor though. And I look forward to trying again next year!

“We have a lot of work to do. Crying is not on the list.” Appropriate!
